Lord Ram had carved his replica in the city of his favorite Kashi, which is full of beliefs and mythology. After conquering Lanka, Maryada Purushottam performed Panchkroshi Parikrama with his family with the wish of freedom from sin. He had established Shivalinga with a handful of sand in the evening offering on the parikrama route. Shivlinga is present in the form of Rameshwar Mahadev at the third stop of Panchkroshi Parikrama.
There is a belief about Rameshwar, the meeting place of Lord Shri Ram and Tripurari, that by darshan and worshiping here, one gets freedom from Rishi debt and Guru debt. Keeping in view the importance of Rameshwar Mahadev, this area is being developed by the Ministry of Tourism.
The detailed description of Lord Shri Ram’s Panchkroshi Parikrama in Kashi is in the Kashi section mentioned in Skandapuran. Apart from this, Panchkosh is also mentioned in detail in Kashi Vaibhav published by Geeta Press, taking a resolution from Manikarnika. In Treta Yuga, Lord Shri Ram had reached Kashi from Ayodhya and circumambulated Panchkroshi with the wish of liberation from sins. In this, after taking resolution at Manikarnika Tirtha, Lord Shri Ram established Shivalinga at Rameshwar Tirtha via Kardameshwar, Bhimchandi and here he sits with his favorite Lord Shiva.
Mahant Anu Tripathi of Rameshwar Mahadev Temple told that as per the description in the Puranas, Vashishtha, the vice-chancellor of Lord Shri Ram, said that if the Lord establishes his presiding deity Shiva in this auspicious time, then he will be freed from sin. Then Lord Shri Ram asked devotee Hanuman to bring Shivling, but there was a delay in bringing Shivling, then Lord Shri Ram brought a handful of sand from Varuna river and established Shivling. Lord Shiva appeared and got absorbed in this Shivalinga along with Lord Shri Ram.
Night rest in Rameshwar Mahadev is believed
Rameshwar Tirtha in the city of Shiva is the place where Lord Rama rested for the night. Mahant of Rameshwar Mahadev Temple told that night stay in Rameshwar has great importance. Therefore, sages and gurus have also been given a place in the temple premises. The pilgrimage site also has Shivalingas established by the hands of Lord Ram, Lakshman, Bharat, Shatrughan and Hanuman. The temple of Tulja Bhavani is also here.
Lord Shiva and Lord Shri Ram are worshipers of each other. Ram has to stay where Shiva is. Lord Ram’s Panchkroshi Parikrama in Kashi is mentioned in the Puranas and other books. On the basis of these beliefs, every year thousands of devotees become free from sins by circumambulating the Panchkroshi of Kashi. – Prof. Vishwambhar Nath Mishra, Mahant, Sankat Mochan Temple.
